A building permit is a license that is required granting legal permission to construct, enlarge, or remodel a building.
How to Apply for a Permit?
Building Permits for Claiborne County are issued by the County Mayor’s Office located in the old courthouse on Main Street in Tazewell. Building permits within city limits of New Tazewell, Tazewell, and Harrogate are issued by those city offices.
A septic permit is required before a building permit can be issued. For more information on a septic permit, call 865-594-6035.
The name of the property owner, address, and square footage of living space is required to obtain a building permit.

Building Permit Prices
Building Permits
$25.00 Fee – Singlewide mobile homes or any remodeling of an existing structure.
$50.00 Fee – Construction under 1499 square feet including carports or garages.
$100.00 Fee – Construction over 1500 square feet including carports and garages.
$10.00 Fee – Detached outbuildings totaling less than 299 square feet. (Barns, Sheds, Pool Houses, Garages, Campers)
$25.00 Fee – Detached outbuilding totaling 300 square feet or more. (Barns, Sheds, Pool Houses, Garages, Campers)
Commercial Permits
$100.00 Fee – Commercial or Industrial structures up 4,999 square feet.
$200.00 Fee – Commercial or Industrial structures over 5,000 square feet.
*Campers in mobile home lots or on private property require a building permit.
